Exogenous isolation enabled us to capture MGE conferring antibiotic resistances without having to depend on the culturability of the MGE host bacteria in manure. The rifampicin (Rif) and kanamycin (Km)-resistant gfp tagged E. coli strain CV601 was used as a recipient in exogenous isolations of transferable amoxicillin, sulfadiazine and tetracycline resistance plasmids. The recipient strain was incubated in 20mL Luria broth (LB) supplemented with rifampicin (50 mg L1 ) and kanamycin (50 mg L1 ) overnight at 28 oC.
