NTCC® PEER cell line is a human T-cell leukemia cell line derived from the peripheral blood of a 4-year-old girl with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). It was established in continuous culture in 1977
Origin: Human T-cell leukemia.
Growth: Grows in suspension as small, round cells. It is known to be a difficult cell line to culture.
Phenotype: The cells express some T-cell markers, such as CD3, CD4, CD5, CD6, and CD7, but lack other typical T-cell properties, such as sheep erythrocyte rosette formation.
Genetic features:
Carries a fusion gene called NUP214-ABL1.
Has a pseudodiploid karyotype with some deletions associated with hematological malignancies, including deletions on chromosomes 5, 6, and 9.
Relationship to other cell lines: The PEER cell line is genetically identical to the BE-13 cell line (NTCC® ACC 396), with BE-13 being a tetraploid subclone of PEER.
Culture requirements: The cell line requires exogenous L-asparagine for adequate growth, a characteristic of certain T-cells. The DSMZ recommends culturing it in RPMI 1640 medium with 20% FBS.
Research applications: As a model for T-ALL, the PEER cell line is used in cancer research to study the mechanisms of leukemia and to test potential therapies.
