NTCC™ NHEK cell stands for Normal Human Epidermal Keratinocytes. These are primary cells, meaning they are isolated directly from human skin tissue (typically from neonatal foreskins or adult skin) and maintained for a limited number of divisions in a lab. They are not a continuous cell line, which is immortalized and can replicate indefinitely.

Key Characteristics

  • Primary Cells: NHEK cells are the closest in-vitro model to the cells found in human skin, making them highly relevant for physiological and biochemical studies.

  • Licensed by Google
  • Source: They are derived from the epidermis, which is the outermost layer of the skin. They are the most common cell type in the epidermis, making up about 90% of the cells.

  • Differentiation: In the body, these cells originate in the basal layer of the epidermis and differentiate as they migrate upwards to the skin's surface, eventually forming the protective outer layer (stratum corneum). In a lab setting, they can be cultured to mimic this differentiation process.

  • Limited Lifespan: Unlike immortalized cell lines, NHEK cells have a finite lifespan and will stop dividing after a certain number of passages (typically around 15-20 doublings).

Research Applications

NHEK cells are a fundamental tool in dermatological, toxicological, and cosmetic research because they accurately model the behavior of skin cells. They are used for:

  • Skin Barrier Studies: Investigating how the skin maintains its protective barrier function against pathogens, chemicals, and water loss.

  • Wound Healing: Studying the cellular processes involved in wound repair and testing the efficacy of wound care products.

  • Toxicology and Safety Testing: Assessing the toxicity and irritancy of chemicals, drugs, and cosmetic ingredients on human skin.

  • Dermatology: Modeling skin diseases like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis to understand their mechanisms and develop treatments.

  • 3D Skin Models: NHEK cells are used to create complex 3D skin equivalent models, which closely resemble human skin tissue and serve as alternatives to animal testing.

  • Licensed by Google
