Nissle 1917 is a strain of Escherichia coli that has been used as a probiotic for over a century.It has a long history of safe use and has been shown to have various health benefits, including improving gut health, boosting immunity, and reducing inflammation.


LuxCDABE is a bacterial operon that encodes enzymes responsible for bioluminescence. When this operon is introduced into a bacterium, it allows the bacterium to emit light. This can be useful for tracking the bacteria in vivo, such as in the gut or in a tumor.


By combining Nissle 1917 with the LuxCDABE operon, researchers can create a bioluminescent probiotic strain that can be used for various applications, such as:
