Description:Treponema pallidum, a spirochete of the family Spirochaetaceae, is the etiologic agent of venereal syphilis. Treponema pallidum has outer and cytoplasmic membranes, a thin peptidoglycan layer, and periplasmic flagella (also called endoflagella) which lie in the periplasmic space. Treponema pallidum Nichols (TpN) refers to a prefix of a nomenclature for the identification of Treponema pallidum polypepitides. TpN 15, a membrane-associated 15-kDa lipoprotein with signal peptide, induces antibody response during infection. TpN17 is a major membrane-associated 17-kDa lipoprotein with signal sequence. TpN 47, a major membrane-associated 47-kDa lipoprotein with carboxypeptidase properties, activates endothelial cells and has high immunogenicity.
