Malignant melanoma is highly treatable when diagnosed early, but can spread rapidly if undetected, resulting in the highest mortality among skin cancer types. Lymph nodes and lungs are the most common sites of melanoma metastases [4], and because of the poor prognosis and limited efficacy of current treatments, metastatic melanoma has generated intense interest as a target for therapeutic intervention.The LOX-IMVI human melanoma cell line is widely used as an in vitro model system to study tumor metastasis and to test for chemosensitivity to potential anti-cancer compounds. LOX-IMVI cells exhibit a tendency to form lung metastases in nude mice independent of the inoculation site [2], and mortality of experimental animals is observed within 3-5 weeks of LOX-IMVI cell injection [3]. LOX-IMVI cells are genetically characterized by lack of the Y chromosome and trisomy 7 [2], and are heterozygous for the BRAF V600E melanoma driver mutation [5].
